Ah, the Academy Awards. The most wonderful time of the year – second only to Christmas. As is customary every last week of February since I started writing about the Academy Awards on my personal blog three years ago, I will be sharing my predictions on who will be walking away with an Oscar.

Over the past three years, I’ve always avoided Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and Best Short Documentary simply because I never got to see any of the nominated films in those categories. However, I was fortunate to see ONE nominee for Best Animated Short, thanks to a certain animated movie from last year. More on that later.

As before, I’ll be including my “runner-up” (i.e. nominee that I think has a huge chance of snatching the Oscar from the respective “pick”). And similar to my related posts over on my blog, this particular post will be an excuse for me to post pictures AND A MUSIC VIDEO instead of actually writing about each and every nominee mentioned here.

Oh, and in case you were wondering….YES, I have seen all the movies on this list! So without further ado, kick back, relax and enjoy my Academy Awards predictions list for 2017!

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: “Hell or High Water”

Runner-up: “La La Land”

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: “Moonlight”

Runner-up: “Fences” OR “Arrival”

BEST MAKE-UP & HAIRSTYLING (a.k.a. the least interesting category in the Academy Awards): “Star Trek Beyond”

Runner-up: “A Man Called Ove” (ANYTHING but “Suicide Squad”! YES, that’s been nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Process that for a minute).

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS: “The Jungle Book”

Runner-up: “Doctor Strange” (To be honest, I’ll be very happy if this movie wins. However, since the Academy hasn’t exactly been fair to superhero movies since “The Dark Knight” back in 2008, I think they’ll play it safe and give the award to “The Jungle Book”)

BEST SOUND MIXING: “Hacksaw Ridge”

Runner-up: “La La Land”

BEST SOUND EDITING: “La La Land”

Runner-up: “Hacksaw Ridge”

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN & BEST COSTUME DESIGN: “La La Land”

Runner-up for Production Design & Costume Design: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: “Toni Erdmann” (Wasn’t the biggest fan of this movie, to be honest, but it did receive a lot of critical praise, and for that reason alone, I think it’ll have a greater chance of winning than the other nominees in this category)

Runner-up: “A Man Called Ove”

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM: “Moana”

Runner-up: “Kubo and the Two Strings”

BEST MUSIC (Original Song) – ‘How Far I’ll Go’ – “Moana” (a.k.a. the “Let It Go” of 2016). Don’t remember this song? Let me give you a reminder.

MUSIC VIDEO TIME!!

Runner-up: ‘City of Stars’ (a.k.a. the song with the catchy whistling on it) – “La La Land”

BEST MUSIC (Original Score): “La La Land”

Runner-up: “Jackie”

BEST FILM EDITING: “La La Land”

Runner-up: “Arrival”

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: “La La Land”

Runner-up: “Silence” OR “Moonlight”

BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM: “Piper” (i.e. the ADORABLE opening act for “Finding Dory” in theaters)

Runner-up: THERE IS NO RUNNER-UP! This is Piper’s award! PIPER IS GOING TO WIN!!!

BEST DOCUMENTARY (FEATURE): “O.J.: Made in America” (My FAVOURITE movie of 2016, in case you were wondering)

Runner-up: “13th” (Only on Netflix)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Viola Davis – “Fences”

Runner-up: Naomie Harris – “Moonlight”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Mahershala Ali (Say that name 5 times….I DARE YOU! Ladies, say that name 3 times into a mirror and see what happens! 😉 ) – “Moonlight”

Runner-up: Jeff Bridges – “Hell or High Water”

BEST ACTRESS: Ruth Negga – “Loving”

Runner-up: Natalie Portman – “Jackie”

BEST ACTOR: Denzel Washington – “Fences” (If you want to know why Denzel is still one of the greatest actors of all time, check out his performance in this movie!)

Runner-up: Casey Affleck – “Manchester by the Sea”

BEST PICTURE: “La La Land” (Call me a passenger on the La La Land Hype Train, but I really think that the the Academy will give its much-coveted award to “La La Land”. Both a music-driven love story and a loving tribute to classic musicals, this is Damien Chazelle’s most ambitious and heartfelt film to date, and well-deserving of the Academy Award for Best Picture)

However, if “La La Land” doesn’t win….

Runner-up: “Moonlight” OR “Hell or High Water”

So what are your thoughts on my Oscar picks? Do you agree with all, some or at least one of them? Do you think “La La Land” deserves ALL 14 Academy Award nominations? Which Oscar snub left you infuriated? Mine is “Silence” for Best Picture. And most importantly, will you be watching the Oscars on Sunday, or will you be avoiding it like your Facebook wall after an episode of “The Walking Dead” airs?
